Canberra Health Services (CHS) is focussed on the delivery of high quality, effective, person centred care. It provides acute, sub-acute, primary and community‐based health services, to the Australian Capital Territory (ACT)—a catchment of approximately 400,000 people. - Four Walk-in Centres: which provide free treatment for minor illness and injury.
- Six community health centres: providing a range of general and specialist health services to people of all ages.
- A range of community-based health services including Early Childhood Services, Youth and Women’s Health, Dental Health, Mental Health and Alcohol and Drug Services.
Overview of the work area and position:
The Office of the Executive Director of Medical Services (EDMS) includes the Physician Training Office, Medical Officer Support, Credentialing, Employment and Training Unit (MOSCETU), GP Liaison Unit (GPLU), Pathology, Pharmacy, Medical Imaging and Library Services.
The Canberra Health Services (CHS) Pharmacy Department have a dynamic, talented team of approximately 100 staff, including: pharmacists, technicians, administration staff and a clinical nurse educator. The department provides a range of clinical services to inpatients and outpatients including a number of specialised services.
Under the direction of the Deputy Director of Quality Use of Medicines, Research and Education and The Lead Pharmacist for Education and Training, the pharmacist will work closely with a team of dedicated and skilled technicians and pharmacists to deliver a safe, efficacious and patient centred service.
- Appropriate Pharmacist qualifications and eligibility for registration as a Pharmacist with the Pharmacy Board of Australia (AHPRA)
- A minimum of three years’ experience as a registered pharmacist in a hospital pharmacy.
- Pharmacy preceptor validation/certificate completed (or enrolled and working towards completion) as per AHPRA Pharmacy Board of Australia recommendations
Prior to commencement successful candidates will be required to:
- Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
- Be registered under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services credentialing and scope of clinical practice requirements for allied health professionals.
- Obtain a Compliance Certificate from OMU (Occupational Medicine Unit) relating to assessment, screening and vaccination processes against specified infectious diseases.
This position is being advertised as a Pharmacist Level 3. This position is required to work across multiply sites.
Under general direction from the Lead Pharmacist for Education and Training:
- Plan and coordinate clinical placements for pharmacy students (externships and short) placements, this may include but not limited to: Rostering and orientation, coordinated with relevant universities, presenting lectures or tutorials as required.
- Supervision and coordination of the development and training program for interns during their graduate year, this may include preceptor training, pre-registration pharmacist training program and workplace paperwork in relation to external ITP (intern training program) requirements eg. NAPE, PSA training programs.
- Maintain currency of clinical pharmacy skills including the ability to provide medication review across a range of services.
- Identify opportunities for and contribute to quality improvement activities including education programs, medication safety initiatives, policy and procedure development, and practice-based research.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and personal performance review whilst supporting the CH&HS core values and the strategic direction of the Pharmacy Department.
- Undertaking other duties as directed, within the approved scope of clinical practice ensuring the delivery of high-quality person and family centred, safe and high-quality patient care.

1. Proven knowledge of adult learning principles coupled with practical skills and experience in providing professional supervision and education to pharmacy staff as well as the development and delivery of formal education to Pharmacy, Nursing and Medical professionals.
2. Demonstrated knowledge and significant clinical experience, including problem solving abilities sufficient to provide an extended level of pharmaceutical care to patients in a hospital setting across a variety of clinical specialties.
3. High level interpersonal and communication skills in a written and oral format. This will involve the maintenance of a supportive work environment as well as the ability to consult, negotiate and liaise effectively with consumers and colleagues with a demonstrated high level of commitment to ongoing personal and professional development
4. Proven record of significant contribution to research and/or quality improvement activities (e.g. policy and procedures, medication safety initiatives, and accreditation activities) aimed to improve Pharmacy services or the quality, safety or efficiency of medicines use across a health system.
