Job Description

Hospital Information – Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) and Palmerston Regional Hospital (PRH)

Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) is fully accredited and the premier teaching hospital in the Northern Territory with over 400 beds. It has links with Flinders Medical School, Menzies School of Health Research, and the Charles Darwin University. Palmerston Regional Hospital (PRH) is a new 60 bed sub-campus of the RDH with services integrated across the two campuses.

Specialities include Aboriginal health, renal medicine, critical care units (both adult and neonatal), tropical diseases, cancer services, and mental health services in addition to standard medical, surgical and paediatric areas.

Department Information
The pharmacy department is modern and progressive. The department is made up of 36 pharmacists and 24 pharmacy technicians.

Services provided include ward based clinical and drug information services, in-patient and out-patient dispensing, sterile and non-sterile manufacturing. The regional pharmacy provides services to remote health centres giving you the opportunity to deliver clinical pharmacy services to patients and staff living in the outback.

The department has close links with Charles Darwin University and provides teaching services to the undergraduate pharmacy degree program and is developing joint practice research projects.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Provide a ward based clinical pharmacy service in accordance with departmental guidelines to nominated wards.
2. Provide supervision and support to pharmacy interns, technical staff and students in accordance with Northern Territory Medicines, Poisons and Therapeutic Goods Act.
3. Dispensing medications for inpatient, outpatient and discharge supply including related counselling, and the manufacture or compounding of pharmaceuticals.
4. Provide culturally appropriate medicines information and education for clients and hospital staff when required.
5. Assist with data collection for pharmacy service evaluation and to ensure compliance with the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standard 4, Medication Safety and deliver workplace improvements.
6. Assist with drug distribution and maintenance of accurate prescription records.
7. Actively contribute to the continuing professional development of self and others through in-services and training.
8. Participate in regular clinical rotations in Department of Health hospitals when required.
9. Contribute to the weekend, on-call, and after hours roster as required.
10. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.

Selection Criteria:

Essential:
1. A degree or equivalent qualification in Pharmacy and Registration as a Pharmacist with the Pharmacy Board of Australia.
2. Demonstrated sound level of current clinical pharmacy practice and knowledge.
3. Proven ability to contribute positively to the workplace, deliver workplace improvements, and willingness to participate in continuing education activities both of self and provision of sessions to hospital staff members.
4. Ability to think laterally and problem solve independently with initiative.
5. Demonstrated flexibility, commitment, ability to negotiate and develop effective working relationships to achieve team goals.
6. Sound communication skills both written and oral and ability to contribute effectively as active member of a multidisciplinary team.
7. Demonstrated time management skills to allow the prioritisation and completion of tasks within expected timeframes.
8. An awareness and understanding of Indigenous culture and an ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.

Desirable:
1. Previous hospital pharmacy experience or post graduate clinical qualification.
