The aseptic dispensing service is provided using the Department's aseptic room and laminar flow cabinet, with formulation of total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and other IV additives and epidural dose forms.
We are committed to ongoing education and strive to provide our pharmacy staff with weekly continuous education opportunities, and likewise, we also offer a Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia (SHPA) accredited residency program. We view clinical placements and an essential part of student training and exposure to a potential future workplace. We accept regular student placements from a number of pharmacy schools each year. Additionally, our pharmacists provide pharmacotherapy education sessions to medical students from the Australian National University and nursing students at the University of Canberra and Australian Catholic University.
A commitment to medication safety and quality use of medicine is reflected by participation in the hospital's Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, the undertaking of various Quality Use of Medicines and Drug Usage Evaluation (DUE) projects, and weekly participation in medical officer education. Calvary pharmacists have presented their research projects at the SHPA annual medicines management conferences.
Pharmacy is strongly represented on Hospital Committees including The Drug and Therapeutics Committee, Accreditation Committees particularly Standard 4: Medication Safety, Clinical Review, Critical Care, Adverse Drug Reaction Committee, Infection Control, Pain Management, and the Antimicrobial Stewardship Working Group.
